Top 25 Escape Board Games - Winter 2020

January 2, 2021 Uncategorized

During the last quarter we have seen an increase in COVID-19 daily cases which again caused several businesses to shutter their doors.  Hopefully mass vaccinations can knock things down in the next 3 to 6 months to allow businesses to fully reopen.

In the meantime, we have continued to play online escape room games and board games, including the games we ranked in the Top 25 Escape Board Games – Fall 2020.  There are a great number of board game versions that allow you to bring this exciting and thrilling experience into your home.

We developed an approach to ranking escape tabletop/board games like that used for ranking escape room businesses.  Instead of using Google, we used review data from Board Game Geek which has a large user base of game players and combined those ratings with Amazon reviews from the US, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, and the UK.  Average ratings by country are from Amazon.com, Amazon.ca, Amazon.de, Amazon.es, Amazon.fr, Amazon.it, and Amazon.co.uk. Click on the flags to visit these sites for each game to view current price, rating, and product availability.

The ETR value for money is a comparative value of price versus average rating across the escape room board games reviewed.

We looked at over 100 escape board games and are providing the top 25 here.  This list includes escape games of several varieties including traditional escape room / puzzle solving, strategy games, escape to avoid a terrible fate, etc.

Several games entered the Top 25 for the first time.  Notable moves up the list include Unlock! Epic Adventures (Up 27 spots), Star Wars: Escape from the Death Star (Up 19 spots), and Escape Room in a Box: The Walking Dead (Up 24 spots). The value in parentheses after the title indicates number of positions the game has moved since the last ranking.

More movement occurred than was expected.  Typically, the averages from the Board Game Geek reviews fell slightly while the Amazon reviews improved.  The Top 25 average rating increased from 4.358 to 4.490.  The competition got stiffer resulting in some games falling in the ranking even though their average review increased.

So let’s get to the Top 25!
